Ethnically, religiously, and in myriad other ways, America is as diverse as ever in her history. American pluralism is alive and well. But what of American unity? Are the shared values, beliefs and symbols that forge a strong and healthy national identity -- that make us Americans -- still working?
The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in Milwaukee established
The Bradley Project on America's National Identity to examine and answer such questions. In June 2008, the Project publicly released its report,
E Pluribus Unum.
The Project brought together leading historians, political scientists, journalists, public figures, and educators to examine aspects of American life crucial to American identity: American national identity; assimilation and immigration; America's place in the world and national security; and historical literacy and American civic education.
To inform its work, the Bradley Project also asked Harris Interactive to conduct a study on
Americans' views on national identity. The Project would like to hear what you think it means to be an American, as well.
