In August, the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center (WMC) honored veterans and their families by temporarily transforming into a U.S. Military base camp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The event served as a musical tribute to Vietnam veterans and included a discussion of the recent book, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, with co-authors Doug Bradley and Craig Werner.  Their book examines the ways in which U.S. troops used music as a means of connecting with one another and with life back home, as well as a way of coping with the challenges and complexities of the war they had been sent to fight.

The festivities included a parade, food trucks from the camp's mess hall, drinks at the hooch tent, and live music.  The event also honored those who sacrificed their lives in service to their country with a traveling Wisconsin Public Radio exhibit entitled, "Wisconsin Remembers:  A Face for Every Name."  It features a photo for each of the 1,161 Wisconsinites officially listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as well as additional photos for names listed on the Highground Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Neillsville, Wis.

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in Milwaukee supports the WMC.
