ON-Lion Letter

The USS Milwaukee, the U.S. Navy's fifth littoral combat ship (LCS), was commissioned on the Milwaukee lakefront in November.  Built by Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., the ship's presence on the lakefront drew thousands for several activities surrounding the commissioning ceremony and the taking of photos for the better part of a week.

The commissioning is the final act that marks entrance of a ship into the naval forces of her nation.  It is the final of three events that bring a ship to life:  keel laying, launching and christening, and commissioning.

Milwaukee's Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation supported the USS Milwaukee's commissioning ceremony -- as it did an earlier commissioning in Milwaukee, for the USS Freedom.  The USS Milwaukee will join the USS Freedom at its homeport in San Diego.

Six more LCS's currently are in construction, and two are in the procurement stage.
