Based on demand from its partners and the reality that the most-influential relationship in a dad's life -- as far as determining the quality of his relationship with his children -- is his relationship with his children's mother, the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) in Germantown, Md., has decided to create programs to help moms facilitate better fathering.

NFI's flagship "for-moms" program, Understanding Dad™:  An Awareness and Communication Program for Moms, has undergone pilot testing at two community-based organizations, and it has been a resounding success.  A recent evaluation found that the group of 34 mothers experienced positive/desirable movement on 40 of 44 measures in three key areas (pro-relationship knowledge, self-efficacy, and attitudes).

This is great news for facilitators across the country seeking to engage mothers in their work to strengthen fatherhood.  Finally, a field-tested, research-based program that addresses one of the most-vital factors that affects fathers' involvement in the lives of their children:  maternal "gate-keeping" and its good effects on the quality of the relationships between mothers and fathers.

The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in Milwaukee supports NFI.
