In March, nearly 300 couples renewed their wedding vows in Milwaukee churches as part of Black Marriage Day, a national initiative aimed at bolstering marriages in the African-American community.  The celebrations topped off months of workshops and retreats on the benefits of marriage and ways to nurture and sustain it.

In Milwaukee, the events were a collaboration between five churches in the city and Compel Them to Come, a local nonprofit organization founded by Angela and Wayne Robbins that is supported by Milwaukee's Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.

"Our families are in crisis," Angela Robbins told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  "We want our young people to know that it's possible to have healthy relationships, to be married and have children -- in that order."
